Greetings and welcome to the Newellsletter, a sporadic, flexible, possibly fun, mostly about design, but not too much about design, letter. It’s a space to write more, which is something I’ve thought about for years, and hopefully the intersection of a lot of things I care about.
As a kiddo whose first landlineless form of communication with the outer world came through the absolute phenomenon that was Yahoo, email has always held a special space in my heart. Name one thing more humanizing than forgetting to attach your attachment.
As certain social media platforms slowly bury themselves, I also wonder if the part of the fun of the newsletter right now is connected to the Y2K nostalgia. Checking my email?? How Meg Ryan of me!
I’m with you in craving less, simpler, slower, and more thoughtful content, which hopefully gives us more permission to stay in touch and stay out of touch.
Elizabeth’s House
I made myself a new little website right around the time I was listening to HS3 on repeat. It was time for an updated home for my work. A new website probably wouldn’t normally be something I’d announce, but it was also a first venture into Webflow (can we have a moment for this no-code website building platform and all the flexibility it gives!) and a second or third venture into Figma. It’s fun to see more programs giving Adobe and Squarespace a run for their money.
For anyone interested, I found the Webflow University videos very helpful. They have answers to everything. This quick tutorial was also something I watched early on gave me an idea of the interface before I really dived in. At risk of sounding like this is sponsored content, (it’s of course not), I am pleased to say that the Webflow support team answered questions I had while building before paying for a subscription.
Speaking of Mail
My grandma worked as a commercial artist before raising my mom and uncle and had designed and sent out a holiday card every year since 1963 and I’ve been scanning the archive. Most of them are screen printed with some homemade paper and watercolor thrown in. Here are a few of my favorites:
And her at work. She’s everything.
That’s all for now. Hope you’re finding balance and joy.
See you soon, but not too soon,
Elizabeth Newell
